Register with a doctor in your new area

If you are moving reasonably far afield, you will need to register with a doctor’s surgery in your new area. This is a very easy process. All you’ll need to do is fill in a short form in your new surgery that allows them to obtain your medical records from your previous surgery. It’s important to do this right away. Don’t wait until you get sick, it will be a huge hassle that will be difficult to deal with when you need medical help.

Pack a box of essentials for the move

To make your move more bearable, you should consider packing an “essentials box”. When you get to your new house, chances are the first thing you’ll want is a cup of tea, and the last thing you’ll want to do is delve in among dozens of boxes to try and find your kettle and some teabags. You might also want to pack a radio and some things to keep your kids entertained while you unpack everything else.

Find out where the mains electricity box, gas meter etc. is in your new property

You should ask the estate agent where the fuse box, gas meter and water mains controls are in your new property. If the house has been vacant for a while, the water and power might not even have turned on. It only takes a second to ask and be shown, and can save hours of hunting later. These things are sometimes in incredibly unexpected places, particularly in older properties.

Tell the DVLA

If you drive, you’ll have to inform the DVLA about moving house. This is to make sure that your driving license and car registration is kept up to date. It also ensures your road tax information is sent to the right place. You should make sure to do this as soon as possible, because it’s actually a legal requirement. It only takes a quick phone call, so do it before your moving day.

Tell the schools

If your children are going to be moving schools, then you should try to get them a place at the new school as soon as possible. Ideally this should be arranged months before, giving your children’s new school plenty of time.

Hire a removals company

Of course the most important part of moving home is the actual moving process. You need a moving company that you can trust with all of your precious possessions. If you are looking for a great Manchester removals company, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
